River Esk Sluice Gate Detail
River Esk Sluice Gate Detail by Jon Middleton, on Flickr
A couple of months ago I took a wander along the bank of the River Esk, and gave the compact camera a spin. Don’t think I’m getting the best photos out of it yet, more practice is needed. However I do really like this one.
Pragmatic Thinking & Learning
Recently I finished reading Pragmatic Thinking & Learning by Andy Hunt, which was a very thought provoking read. It’s published by the Pragmatic Programmers, but that should not put off non-programmers (like myself) as there is much to benefit both technical and non-technical people. In fact the only requirement is to have a human brain.
The first half of the book details how the brain works at a physiological level, models of brain function and the habits that tend to be associated with learning. I found the discussion of differences between L-mode (Linear) and R-mode (Rich) very insightful.

Big News (and why the lack of new posts)
It’s been a while since I posted anything here, this is entirely down to my wife expecting our first child. So I’ve been really busy getting the back room ready for the new arrival. However I’m hoping that there will be an end to the DIY in the comming week(s) and it’ll allow me time to do more stuff(tm).
Best Advice for starting with an dSLR
Almost 2 years ago when I got my dSLR, the best advice I was given by a some friends was to get a 50mm Prime lens. These are just great lens, they let you give your attention to the photo. By thinking about where you take a picture from instead of playing with the zoom ring.

This picture is from a walk last Xmas with the Canon 50mm f/1.8 lens, it’s just great lens opticily. Plus it currently costs less than £70.
Full Moon

My final shoot from trying out photograhing this evening full moon, quite happy with this one even tho it’s been cropped.
Taking Maperture for a spin
I’ve installed Maperture this evening and I’m quite impressed, it’s so easy to use that the included screencast was almost not required. So there’s my first Geotagged set on Flickr, don’t think I’ll do it for all photo’s just those it makes sense for.
Now for an idea just how much rain we’ve had in Edinburgh over the last couple of weeks.
